Plan 53-B Omschrijving

The range of Flopac® SPB units cover plan 53B pressurised piping systems that are typically used with arrangement 3 contacting wet seals (3CW-FB, 3CW–BB or 3CW-FF). Generally speaking Flopac would recommend this configuration for most wet dual seal arrangements. Suitable for most applications the configuration with a Flopac® SPB plan 53B is the more compact to built, easier to operate and offers a higher sealing integrity if compared to configurations that use plans 53A, C or 52.

Moreover it leaves no undesired residues like the often polluted buffer liquid of a plan 52. Pressurised seals with Flopac® SPA (SPB) plan 53(B) units should be selected when zero emission is a requirement such as with the more hazardous and lethal applications and also, for applications with abrasive or polymerizing products that would either damage the seal faces or cause problems with the buffer-fluid system. The one disadvantage to be accounted for is that there will always be some leakage of barrier fluid into the product. Though minimal, the product must be able to sustain this small amount of barrier fluid.

Pressurisation

Flopac SPB units (plan 53b) are operated at a pressure above the box pressure¬, ensuring a state of zero-emission. For pressurisation it uses a gas loaded accumulator¬ that stores a volume of energised barrier liquid. The gas is separated from the barrier¬ liquid by means of an internal bladder, thus eliminating the risk of gas entrapment¬ and cavitations at the seal area. Another advantage over the regular plan 53A/C units.

 

The volume stored in the accumulator is applied to make-up for the normal leakage¬ that is required to lubricate and cool the seal faces. The operational (loop) temperature¬ is controlled by a heat exchanger sized to neutralize the total heat load. (friction heat plus heat soak).

Flow is generated by a device integrated within the seal, the so-called pumping scroll or ring. Such device should be designed to offer a minimum flow versus head of 6 lpm @ 0,25 bar. An external circulating device (pump) should be considered if the pumping ring is incapable of offering a sufficient flow. For those applications Flopac offers a range of magnetically driven (sealless) circulation pumps.

Level instruments

Common operating parameters like pressure and temperature are monitored by relevant instrumentation. And there is yet another advantage of the Flopac series SPB plan 53B units if compared to plan 52 and 53A/C units. Where the operating volume can be determined by the relation between the nitrogen pre-charge pressure and barrier pressure the often complex and expensive level instruments can be omitted.
